Practical details

When
Every July, about ten days (2026: 3 to 12 July)
Where
Old town of Perugia; main paid stage at the Arena Santa Giuliana
Winter edition
Orvieto, around New Year

Umbria Jazz is Perugia’s summer jazz festival, held for about ten days every July since the 1970s. During those days the old town turns into a series of stages: free concerts in the main square and along Corso Vannucci, bands in the gardens, late-night jams in bars and big-name evening shows at a large open-air arena. The 2026 edition ran from 3 to 12 July. If you want to go, the main tasks are simple: watch for the programme, book a room early and plan to get around without a car.

This is an independent visitor guide. For tickets, programme and official information, always use the festival’s own website, umbriajazz.it.

How the festival works

Umbria Jazz mixes paid and free events, which is part of its appeal.

Type of event Where Tickets
Headline evening concerts Arena Santa Giuliana, an open-air venue below the old town Paid, seated or standing, sell out for big names
Theatre concerts Historic theatres in the old town Paid, smaller audiences
Daytime and evening open-air sets Piazza IV Novembre, Giardini Carducci and other squares Free
Street bands and parades Corso Vannucci and nearby streets Free
Late-night sessions Clubs, cafés and smaller venues Mixed, often free or with a drink

The programme is published in spring, with headline names often announced earlier. In 2026, according to the regional tourism website and festival announcements, the edition honoured Miles Davis and John Coltrane in their centenary year, and more than half of the events were free.

Tickets

  • Buy only through official channels. The festival’s website lists the authorised sales points. Avoid resale platforms with inflated prices.
  • Big names sell fast. If one headline concert is the reason for your trip, buy as soon as sales open.
  • Free does not mean empty. Popular free concerts in the main square get crowded; arrive early for a good spot.
  • Day planning. It is perfectly possible to enjoy the festival without any paid ticket, just by moving between the free stages.

Where to stay

Rooms in and around Perugia’s old town fill quickly in July, and prices rise.

  • Old town (centro storico): best for walking to the free stages and staying out late. Fewest car options.
  • Near a Minimetrò stop or the main railway station: often better value, with a short ride up to the centre.
  • Countryside and nearby towns: an agriturismo or a hotel in a neighbouring town works if you have a car and want quiet nights, but plan your return carefully.

Our guide to where to stay in Perugia explains the areas in detail.

Getting around during the festival

Perugia’s old town sits on a hill, and in July much of it is closed to traffic. The best way in is by Minimetrò, the small automated cable-driven train from the lower town, or by the escalators that climb through the Rocca Paolina from the car parks below. The Arena Santa Giuliana lies below the old town and can be reached on foot from the centre. Read our page on getting around Perugia without a car before you arrive, and check the last Minimetrò times if you stay outside the centre.

Arriving from Rome or Florence by train is straightforward; at Perugia’s main station you can switch to the Minimetrò or a bus.

Tips for a good festival

  • Heat: July afternoons in Umbria are hot. Carry water, plan siestas and save energy for the evenings.
  • Food: the old town gets busy at dinner time. Book a table or eat early by Italian standards, around half past seven.
  • Combine with day trips: mornings are quiet, ideal for a trip to Assisi or Lake Trasimeno before the evening concerts.
  • Accessibility: many free stages are on sloping, uneven streets. The arena and theatres can provide information about accessible places.

Umbria Jazz Winter in Orvieto

Around New Year, a smaller winter edition takes place in Orvieto, with concerts in theatres, halls and churches. It is a calm way to experience the festival, and Orvieto is easy to reach by train from Rome and Florence. Our Orvieto guide helps you plan the town itself.

More festivals

Umbria Jazz is the biggest summer event in Umbria, but not the only one. Our festival calendar lists the year’s main dates, and if you come back in autumn, Eurochocolate fills the same streets with a very different crowd.

Frequently asked questions

When is Umbria Jazz 2027?

The festival is held every July in Perugia. The exact dates for 2027 are announced by the organisers, usually months in advance. Check the official website before booking travel.

Is Umbria Jazz free?

Partly. A large share of the concerts, on open-air stages in the old town, in gardens and in some smaller venues, are free. The headline evening concerts and the theatre shows need paid tickets.

Where should I stay for Umbria Jazz?

The old town of Perugia puts you within walking distance of the free stages and the late-night music. If prices are too high, stay near a Minimetrò stop or a railway station and travel in. Book as early as possible, because rooms fill up fast.

What is Umbria Jazz Winter?

It is a shorter winter edition held in Orvieto over the New Year period, with concerts in theatres, halls and churches. It is a good alternative if you prefer a quieter, smaller festival.
